Most famous for his novel, The Rifters, Tom Sharpe was born in 1931. He read classics at Brasenose College, Oxford, then went on to take a PhD at New College Oxford. Sharpe then taught English Literature at the University of Reading before becoming literary editor of the Daily Telegraph and author of several acclaimed novels. His novels include: The Rifters (1978); The Devil's Laughter (1984); and The Ape (1988)
